Week 3 Action Research

My action Plan:

School Vision: J.O. Schulze is dedicated to high levels of learning to ensure the academic success of all our students for the 21st century.

School Mission: J.O. Schulze community will provide a safe and nurturing learning environment that fosters engaging learning opportunities.

My research topic
Effective school research identifies parental involvement as a critical component to student success. In what ways can we improve parental involvement for all parents especially those who seem most hesitant?

Goal: We will improve student’s success by improving parental support, insistence and expectations through parenting classes, home visits, conferences and family events.

  1. Hello Martha,
Great, elaborate action plan! I picked the same topic as you did. I feel like my inquiry was only a portion of yours. I like the way you involved the community, teachers, parents, etc. My school has only existed for 4 years, and it is a very young school. We are short staffed and I feel that if I want this inquiry to occur, I would have to be the main person through out it. I think that after we figure out the barriers, then we could figure out what programs we would like to implement. Is there any way I could have your demographics to see if they match mine. I am very interested to know if the No Excuses program helped your school.

  2. I will send you our demographics. However, my school only adopted the No Excuses philiosophy last year. We were not adopted by this organization until June. I used Damen Lopez and Ruby Paynes research to help me create these activities. I was able to go to the No Excuses conference in Austin this past June. I bought two books that have been very helpful with this research project. One of my trainings was all about parent activites. They also reference Ruby Payne in their acttivities as well. I can e-mail you those power points as well.

  3. Excellent job researching and developing your action research, Martha. I understand the district is focusing on reaching our African American population. Do you feel that those parents may fall into the Level 3 "Crucial Parent" at your campus? If so, is there anything in particular you plan on doing for those parents? Parental involvement has been an issue in our district for years. I would be curious to know about the number of parents that volunteer for Schulze's PTA or FFC. What would their role be in your action research? Does your campus have a parent liaison? I look forward to reading about how many of those Crucial Parents you are able to reach and which methods worked best. Good luck!

  4. Maritza thank you for your comments and your questions it did give me much to think about that I had not considered before. I spoke with my administrator today and did ask him about the A.A. population. He said that last year they took many initiative to close the gap between students achievement and parental involvement with their African American sub group. He did not want me to focus on one group in particular for this study. He wanted me to focus on the "crucial parent" as defined by the action plan those needing the most assitance. I did not even think to ask him about PTA or FFC. This is a wonderful question I will need to ask. I don't even know which we have PAT or FFC nor do I know how involved they are. Thanks for this question. I have submit this question to my administrator and will collaborate further to see if I need to add them into my research plan. We do have a parent liasion. This liasion is in charge of a program called "Parent in School." My administrator suggested I interview the liasion so I could get a better grasp of all that they do. However, they will not be on campus for another week or two. Thus, once I have spoken to the liasion I can again modify my research if the need arose. Thanks again for the great questions they were very benefical.

  5. I forgot to mention based on the strides they took last year on their African American sub group they saw huge gains and student success. Based on last years data he feels that gap has been closed. However, he would like to use the data I will gain from my research to identify sub-groups we need to target for next year if there is one in particular.
